These gases spin a turbine, which compresses incoming air and forces it into the engine’s intake manifold. Turbo lag is the slight delay between when you press the accelerator and when the turbo starts to deliver boost. This happens because the turbo relies on exhaust gases to spool up and generate pressure, which takes a moment, especially at lower engine RPMs. Modern turbo systems and tuning options can significantly reduce lag.

A wastegate regulates turbocharger boost pressure. Once boost pressure reaches a set limit, the wastegate opens to divert excess exhaust gases away from the turbocharger turbine.
